Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive Electrical and Electronic Equipment is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the UK, increasing by at least 5% each year. The UK public dispose of over 1.2 million tonnes of electrical and electronic waste every year; this is the equivalent of 150,000 double decker buses and would be enough to fill the new Wembley Stadium 6 times over. Presently, 2008, the UK’s landfill sites are reaching full capacity. In July 2007, the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive became part of UK law. The aim of the Directive is to minimise the impact of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) on the environment when such EEE becomes waste. All electrical and electronic retailers are now obligated to make appropriate provisions enabling customers buying new small appliances, such as kettles and hairdriers, to return their old waste appliance, on a like-for-like basis to the retailer from where they are purchasing the new appliance. This method of return must provide the consumer with a free, legitimate method disposing of WEEE in a environmentally friendly manner.
Failure to segregate the different types of recyclable material in the home usually results in items being disposed of in landfill sites or being incinerated. EEE often contain hazardous substances and toxins which, when disposed of incorrectly can leak into the ground. This can contribute to soil and water pollution which is hazardous to human health, can endanger wildlife and is harmful to the environment. WEEE can be recycled and the resources recovered can be used to make new consumer goods.
The crossed out wheelie bin with the thick bar underneath (left)is used to denote that the (WEEE) product was placed on the EU market after 13 August 2005 these products should not be disposed of with general household waste.
This symbol (left) is generally used to denote that batteries should not be disposed of with general household waste. Please dispose of batteries at your local council’s recycling centre (see links below).

Please note that the nature and quantity of the old appliance(s), (WEEE) being returned must be the same as that being purchased, (similar type and same function) e.g. one small hairdrier for one small hairdrier. The appliance being returned must not contravene any Health and Safety requirements. Postage costs will be refunded.
